We could not take photos inside the main building (the tomb cover). There were panels in there that must have been 4 feet by 5 feet in size and an inch and a half thick all carved from one slab of marble. The detail was like an expanded piece of lace.
The color is not paint. They are all inlays of precious stone: lapis, jade, garnet, and the like. If the slab is 2 inches thick, then the inlay is also 2 inches thick. That is a lot of precious stone. And it is hard to imagine carving all this to fit without the use of power tools.
Specific photos:
1) Shows the relief on the carving work.
2) Shows the scale of the inlay work. This is NOT paint. It is inlays of precious stone…sometimes 2” thick!
