Frankincense Tree

Frankincense comes from the sap of this special tree. You put nicks into the bark of the tree along the trunk. In about 10 minutes sap starts to accumulate. After a couple of weeks you get a softball-sized lump of sap. When the sap is dried, it hardens into crystals that can be burned. The smoldering crystals give off a pleasant aroma. It was said during biblical times that burning frankincense was the best gift one could offer to their god.

The photo is of Kathleen and our guide at a Frankincense tree.
