Frankincense comes from the sap of this special tree. You put nicks into the bark of the tree along the trunk. In about 10 minutes sap starts to accumulate. After a couple of weeks you get a softball-sized lump of sap. When the sap is dried, it hardens into crystals that can be burned. The smoldering crystals give off a pleasant aroma. It was said during biblical times that burning frankincense was the best gift one could offer to their god.The photo is of Kathleen and our guide at a Frankincense tree.
