We docked at Piraeus, Greece, which borders Athens with no noticeable line of demarcation separating them. Piraeus has a population of 1MM people, and Athens has 4MM, so together they have 40% of Greece’s total population of 12MM people.
Tomorrow is Greek Orthodox Easter. This has one very positive benefit and one slight inconvenience. The benefit is that the traffic is absent. We got around with no traffic hang-ups. The slight negative is that shops closed this afternoon at about 2:30pm. People go home to take a nap, because the Easter celebrations start at midnight tonight.
For joined another couple and hired a taxi for 4-1/2 hours for 160 euros. This was a great choice because we saw more than one could have with any of the Princess excursions, spent less, and had fewer other people to deal with.
We went to the old port, the Acropolis (including the Parthenon), The Temple of Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, the Old Olympic Stadium, the changing of the guard at Parliament, St. George Monastery, and the Plaka (19th century shopping district). More of these with the photos below.
