Day 84 – 4/8 – Salalah, Oman

Despite the low expectations that the ship’s lectures had given us, this proved to be an interesting and pleasant visit.

We handled the excursion on our own. A group of 4 of us bargained for a taxi at the gate to the port. For $45 apiece we saw twice as much as what was offered by any of the Princess excursions. One would have had to book both a $64 and a $59 Princess excursion together to see what we saw. We got a 5-1/2 hour trip with the taxi. He spoke English and was quite knowledgeable about the sites.

There are three types of people in Oman: desert people, city people, and mountain people. They each have their own language.

We were surprised at the variety of terrains that existed in the area. Within a 30 mile radius of the ship’s port, there was a city, a desert, beaches, and two distinctive types of mountainous terrain. We saw each of these.

On our tour we went to Job’s tomb, a mosque, saw lots of camels, the Sultan’s palace, a shopping souk, an archaeological site, a beach, and frankincense tree’s in the mountains.

Our ship’s departure is pushed back a couple of hours tonight so that we can travel through the Gulf of Aden in a convoy with other ships.
