This port is located at the northern end of the Suez Canal on the eastern bank (the African side). It is about 130 miles to Cairo, or a 2-1/2 hour bus ride.
While Port Said is not in the Sinai, it was mostly destroyed in the war of 1967. Nobody wanted to move back in, so the government set it up like Hong Kong, as a duty-free city. If someone moved back and proved they had lived in Port Said, then they could buy cars and appliances and such without duty. This is a big deal because duties might be 100% on a car.
So the city redeveloped, but about two years ago other Egyptians felt it was no longer fair to maintain this status, so it was ended.
