Forbidden City Photos

The Forbidden City covers 180 acres. It was build starting in 1420. It is about 5/8 miles on each side, surrounded by a moat 50 meters wide, 10 meters, by 2.5 miles in perimeter. It took 15 years to build, using over 1,000,000 regular workers and 100,000 artisans.

It has a total of 9999 ½ “rooms.” A room is defined by an area under and between 4 pillars.

The front half of the complex has about 3 courtyards and 3 building along the centerline. This part could have only men visitors. The back half was the living quarters. Only the emperor, his wife, his concubines, and his eunuchs were permitted in this part.

Did they have "chicken Surprise" on their menu?

A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the 'Chicken Surprise.'

The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.

"Good grief, did you see that?" she asks her husband.

He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down.

Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening, and demands an explanation.

"Please sir," says the waiter, "what you order?"

The husband replies, "Chicken Surprise."
