Saigon River

We are sailing up the Saigon River early in the morning. Saigon is about 40 miles up the river, so we had a local pilot board the ship at 3:00am to help navigate. The river’s edge looks like in some of the Vietnam movies, with trees all along the banks. It must be high tide because the trees are in the water along the river’s edge.

I was surprised to learn that Vietnam has a population of 85 million, or about 1/4th that of the US. I would not have guessed that many people. 55 million of these were born after 1975, when the war ended. They had a baby boom to replace the losses.

Cambodia, where we fly to later this afternoon has only 14 million people.
