Kennin-ji Temple

This is the oldest zen temple in Kyoto. In this temple we saw the paintings of the Wind and Thunder Gods a very famous work of Sotatsu. The garden in front of the building is known as the dry mountains & water style. The raked gravel is to represent the ocean and the rocks mountains. The most memorable painting was the twin dragons on the ceiling of one of temples. Dragons are believed to be protectors of the Buddhist teachings. The pictures don’t do them justice—the measure 11.5 m x 15.7m (the size of 108 tatami mats).

The 2nd photo is about 50 foot by 80 foot ceiling painting in the temple. (Poor lighting)

Check out our sharp red slippers in photo 3. We had to remove shoes at least 25 times today to enter temples!
