Gyeongbokgung Palace

This is the main palace of Korea. It was originally built in 1395. It was the home of the king, and Seoul was the capital of Korea since 600 years ago. They had to have this be slightly smaller than the Forbidden City palace in Chain because Korea is smaller than China.

This place is massive. It has huge open courtyards, impressive stone work, lots of vibrant colors. Much of the paint is renovated at certain intervals. The front half of the total complex included 3 successive courtyards and was ceremonial. The back half were the various living facilities, which housed about 1000 people.

We saw a changing of the guard ceremony. (photos above) We learned a lot about what the different buildings were for, and why they had certain features.
