Photo 2: From shrine looking across bay to Hiroshima. Imagine the high-tide water level filling in the background up to level of the decking.
This Shinto shrine was originally built in 593, then rebuilt in 1168 by Taira-no-Kiyomori. It has 280 meters of corridor with 20 building. While it was impressive, we unfortunately were there at low tide. At high tide the water level was at the edge of the corridors, so it looked like the entire structure floats on the water. So imagine our photos with an elevated water level.
This island is also known for its oysters. We would have to agree that they are the best we ever tasted!
The Five-storied Pagoda. Each level of this pagoda from the top represents first heaven, air, fire, water earth. These were the basic 5 elements of nature as viewed around the year 1200, and is thus base of the Shinto religion.
