We docked in Osaka, but did our visiting today in Kyoto. We got adventurous and did this trip on our own. This involved taking two subway links to the main train station, then taking the bullet train to Kyoto. We then did 5 successive taxi rides to various temples and shrines. Then bullet train back, then 2 subway links. Eleven separate transportation steps on our own. Not bad.
We had the confidence to do this because Kathleen had consulted prior to the trip with an Ohio neighbor who had lived in Japan. She told us the 4 temples that she thought we needed to see given our time constraints, provided maps, and encouraged that we could pull this off.
This ended up being a great choice. The bullet train took 15 minutes to get between the two cities, whereas regular train was one hour and bus was 1-1/2 hours. In all we spent about $80 each, including transportation and entrance fees compared to the typical Princess tour at $189 that only saw 3 temples and probably did not see them in as much depth as we were able to do.
