India’s Time Zone

We are still one-half hour off from nearly everyone else in the world. Mumbai and Port Blair were on the same time, and they are a couple thousand miles apart East-to-West. I find this bizarre that all of India appears to be on a single time zone, and one-half hour different from everyone. Does anyone understand why this is? (Someone said India did not want to be on the same time as Pakistan.)

The other possibility is that India is so big East to West that the half hour was the compromise that allowed for a single time zone for the entire country.
