Day 107 – 5/1 – le Mont-St-Michel, France

We got off the ship in Le Havre, France, this morning, rented a car, left the ship for 2 nights, and drove about 3 hours to a small village called le Mont-St-Michel.

For those of you who love quaint, old villages, this one is over-the-top. As we drove in the general vicinity of it, I saw it in the distance. (Kathleen was driving.) It looked totally out of place. Nothing this huge should exist in the farming area that we were in. And it had to be huge. The sense of proportion did not make any sense.

The town is on an island at high tide. Low tide used to be the only time that you could walk over to it. They built a causeway a hundred years or so ago, so I’m not sure if it is ever now cut off. It still might be on the twice-a-year super high tides.

The few pictures that I’ll post do not do it justice. If anyone googles “le Mont-St-Michel” (or obvious variations). If anyone does this and finds an awesome website with photos, please post it under “comments” on the blog. If so, I’ll see it and alert others. I’ve seen aerial photos during the day at high tide, and they are awesome. I’ve heard that the night photos when the city is lit up are even more spectacular.

Photos:
1) This is what you see from a great distance. It seems out of place.
2) Exterior view from closer in.
3) Another photo from nearby.
