In Normandy, we had a tour guide named Ellwood. He is featured by Rick Steeves, a tv guy who does a show about travel in Europe.
Elwood is, as simply as I can put it, a fanatic on D-day. He gave us a 9-hour tour, and ran or drove very fast all of the time.
He owns over 100 WWII helmets. He has WWII uniforms, and has manikins on which to display them. He is part owner with 3 other people of a Sherman tank. (When they go in to buy gasoline, it takes over 1000 gallons!) He owns a tank resupply vehicle. He used to own a halftrack, but said they were to unreliable to maintain.
Elwood owns a home in the first village liberated in WWII, in the house where the first paratrooper landed. He hired a private detective to find that person.
So, bottom line, we had an incredibly passionate tour guide on the subject of WWII and the D-day landing. I have lots of unorganized notes, but plan to take the time to post some of what he said. I anticipate that this could be a disproportionate amount compared to other visits.
